Oh Wednesday, and I gave my coats away. Tied
them in a thick embrace, took them out
the door like a corpse. The old list in the old
down parka’s pocket: marzipan, cream, plum
puddings,
rescued from the poor. Wednesday
morning's excitement of coffee and French bread,
crumbs among the stars on the angel tablecloth.
Oh, and the bad night’s sleep, Tuesday

in unseasonal warmth, the slight nightmares: sheaves
of dried leaves snatched angrily from my embrace,
my arms and the shame of ensuing nakedness.
