If I came to you when you were old, in pain
adrift, angry, if I came again and again,
bringing the little gifts of flowers, of my flowering
presence in those bleak damp hours
if I came, as I’ve said, relentless
unafraid, oblivious, impossible to turn
away, even if you didn’t like me much
at firstmy excesses of feeling, my ornate diction
even if you felt burdened, longed to be alone,
(or at least for the privilege of making the invitation)
even if our exchanges were, at first, neutral
just the simple accumulated fact of those hours
our silences, small refusals gradually overcome,
