God appeared to Dante as a cloud.
Dante had been lying on the ground

like a clod, compressed
by the weight of a love gone wrong.

And Dante, lifting his head as if to see,
saw not that he was still lost in an isolated fog,

but encompassed and embraced—able
to walk again—and in an atmosphere of grace.
