This decision has not been easy.
Daily when I pull my shorts
over my scarred knees, I think,
“Football has been good to me.”
When I recall the yards of Dixie cups,
the highways of Ace bandage,
the sweet perfume of liniment,
and the trainer’s gnarled hands,
I know I owe football a lot.

The sportswriters abused me with neglect,
but that’s not their fault.
It’s not in their nature to understand
the subtleties of the game.
It’s more than Xs and Os,
more than the slotback right, the wishbone T
or splitting the zone.
