It is cold but I know how to be
Even colder. I have had centuries
Of practice. Listen to me: I have
Only one desire.

Look at me trapped in sanguine,
See what it is to lie to yourself.
All day long I look and avoid looking
At my face. What I see, what others see

Of me are too different to contemplate,
Yet that is all I was made to do.
I am queen and chief spectacle, both.
Between holly and oak, the hooves

That stand in my lap are sharp,
I am not old enough, yet already creased
Like paper I fold to prepare for your eyes.
No room to move. Hung in this black

Chamber, the air tastes of dust,
But it was not always this way.
There was wine, sweat of dance, blood
From a kill. To protect us, we live here.

Carnival freaks in a cool chamber
With no windows and two doors.
Only the monkey tastes round sweets.
Pinned like this, time means nothing.
