We uneanhed the masonry walls,
   doors and gates, burrow-like openings,
the cold stone steps,
the sky sinking in, deeper and deeper,
dug up the floor too, rumbling away—
   exposing the centuries’ composed layers.

We unearthed hard-up Troy,
   poor little Pompei,
the sacred horizons of the subterranean city
   — the chalk’s ulcerated,
we freed our roots from the stone
   — they’re full of aching.
