for Lucy Logsdon

She hears the story again, and this time, instead of feigning
     interest,
instead of placing the right amount of incredulity in her voice,
she hangs up when the caller says everyone is vulnerable,

don’t be surprised it happened to you. For weeks people she
     hardly knows
have called her, some up front with purpose and names, others
secretive about meaning. The story she’s told varies in small
     details

but the themes are abuse, deceit, manipulation, no matter
     the tone or pitch.
The intensity and confidence almost convince her, almost turn
     her against
what she has known for years, what her experiences have taught her.
