The Purple Clematis
Each day the purple clematis climbs further up the wire beside the kitchen door
Green fingers twine around the strands of wire
And soon there is another blossom with a yellow star at its center
Whom are you chasing, I ask the flower
Are you racing the horses of the sun?
Do you imagine that Phaethon, son of Helios, has time to fall in love with you?
Surely you’ve heard that he is condemned to die every evening
How like a man, she answers, what do I care about the drivers of chariots?
I’m only looking for a small crack in this wall
Where I may conceal myself from that ruffian, the north wind Boreas
Who only too soon will be here with his cruel winter.
