(Flemish Peasant Family)

No wonder the Antwerp teashops
refuse him—except with a heel of bread
through the back door. Held out
to the baker, his palms, still sticky with paint,
hardly appear the hands of a man.

The four lives he wanted to lift
only obliquely to his canvas
have waylaid his backward glance.
An elbow rip for the boy’s shirtsleeve
takes all day. The swift forwardness slows.

He cannot make the man in the cap appear
his father exactly, though the woman’s
hard glare has dropped from above
the very breast he suckled. Such looks
take their long passages through him.

Once he liked to sip strong wine. Now nothing
is too strong going through but the light.
July’s sundown so late it shortens a night’s
dreaming: chins & ankles, tatters for a man’s
cap brim, grime for a woman’s petticoat hem.
