Grandmomma plucked pin-feathers. I stared
into the cavity and tried
to imagine such jumbled, meaty things
inside my belly. She saved the liver
and tossed the heart aside. “How come
you’re throwing that away?” The Bible says
you’re not supposed to eat a heart.
But when she wasn’t watching me,
I snatched it from the sink—the heart—
and salted it and peppered it
and ate it raw. She never noticed,
which was itself a victory.
When, younger, I stared at the burners,
Momma would say, “Uh-uh, don’t touch.”
