Across the divider lines and cracked asphalts of America,
the cottonwood, poppy, paintbrush bloom, iris
and interstate litter live without a past or future,
yet unfold into roadside history.

Here in the west we want to live loudly without a past,
counting on a future perfect with sensibly ordered signposts.
Highway-weary at a picnic table, rattled by wheels,
I’m of no account against confusion.
