I. Landscape from a Window

Two vases of flowers squarely on the ledge
stare out as though they regret the countryside,
mean to ignore you squinting above the edge
of your canvas, generating color that slides
over the sill, pours into the valley an intense
hue. Though you mean only dusk under eucalyptus,
buildings loom like sepulchers sinking in a dense
wave of cobalt. Was this how Atlantis drowned?
Scattered islands of light, cedars at attention,
the palace consumed by dark. Unable to stem the flood
from your palette, the impulse of creation,
you urge a donkey to safer ground and would
save Tangiers poised by the sea on high cliffs
from which minarets signal the sky for relief.
