As I set out on the conquest
of reality, my right arm
sweeps the air clear
while my left flexes

as if to suggest a stand of pines.
Dangling black branches
interrupt the empty sky.
I’m alone, there are no names

on the journey. The nerves and joints
map their own disappearance.
The dance insists
on a threshold, a boundary

to show how far
the feet are from the edge.
It’s all mica-dazzle here,
without one shadow to soften it.

Mirrors burn up
in the atmosphere of this country.
I rely on muscular habit
to part the folds, find out

the obscure entrances.
The hips are a platform,
the neck an antenna
craning from wave to wave.
