The men walk among ribs.
The glow they see by is rooted in the bones.
They have entered a cavity in the cliff,
The spined hole
Around which the cliff built itself.

The rocks poke and grind
In the shape of the animal’s dying.
When it had been dead long enough
A river seeped through
And forced a way under the limestone tomb.

Up from the narrows comes the night boat.
The lanterns tremble. The passengers
Crane their necks toward the scaffolding
On whose racks the inner wall of the cave
Is laid flat to dry.
