In memory of Donald Justice

He was not himself. He was just a shell
a hermit crab had made into home
                                awhile, then left behind.
                                                In Cedar Key

that February, he sat in the tide of talk
                that lapped around him, listening.
                                What did he hear
                                                that we could not?

Some great storm whiting out his years
in Iowa, then Florida as well?
                                Out the picture window
                                                he kept his back to,

a fog refused to lift from a gulf it painted
as gray as itself. We drove home
                                in the dark, on highway
                                                straight and empty.
