Call it a lack;
Lacking the ability
To stop at a certitude,
To arrive at a plain of comfort,
There to make a substantial abode and
There reside, contented, with pipe and bowl.

All is flux.
The wet wars against the dry,
The cold against the hot,

Manhatten upon the Marquesas,
Fiji upon the widows’ walks
Of Bedford and Nantuckett.

So Heraclitus would have it said,
But not so Jehovah, nor
His righteous folk. Still,

The way into the valley
Of the shadow of doubt
Is the way out
And back in, as from everlasting.
