and the backyard is awash with daffodils.

Between the sun and yellow flowers exists
a silent chatter as the daffodils push
through the matted leaves and detritus
of winter. You try to think the flowers
and blue sky offer an essential worth

beyond any you impose on them. Fragile stems,
frail blossoms: how muscular they must be
to bear your devotion. For the cat they form
a decorative cover in her constant quest
for creatures small and briefly inattentive.

Across your eyes today is also a picture
from the paper: a man with a cigar and his legs
spread apart shooting his rifle at another man
collapsed on the ground. There is nothing special
about this photograph. Yesterday had a picture;
