Firecracker Capital of the U.S.A.
Barefoot Las Vegas. A place devoted
to the possibilities of a spark.
3 a.m. we pull in. 24 hour
fireworks mall, where the pinstriped neon
bullies the sky like traffic from the stars.
Like a bullseye, it creates its
own concentration.
The clerk behind the counter,
spit-slicked and watchful,
has a toothpick in his lips
and a drawl like a meal
stuck in his throat. He nods
to the shoppers in the China gaudy aisles.
They have come for their Flying Pagodas,
their Giant Sidewinders, great tin hens
