The trees, the ones
she loves,
                  are desperate—
                  healthy vines have

entwined to clamber up
their trunks.
                  Grape climbers in the canopy.
                  Understory of branches

dripping bark but dry as paper char.
Red squirrels run
                  the tops of
                  the trees, never touching earth.

The gods are comic,
who will
                  not perish.
