I slam Earth again and again,
and again and again. Not as

a pediatrician slaps a newborn
to generate first breath, but as

a crazed mother slaps and slaps
                to punish a willful child.

I attack with whatever is at my disposal—
edges of broken shells, sharp glass

shards, whale bones, driftwood planks.
                I join tropical storms, hurricanes,

I erode, surely but slowly, your
paltry grassy dunes. They will fall.
