their eyes shadowed by other edifices,
is it any wonder these citizens of Wheeling
saw the need of a Main Street Bridge?

Quite apart from the slopes around them
and contours none yet perceived as old,
the impulse of all landscapes found them quickly:
to gauge the arcs; to build, to build.

Dull skies descended to empty hilltops
and ordinary seabirds paddled towards
the opposite bank of a glimmerless river.
