Not the tired figures of our own fatigue,
our misplaced envy, sleep eternal, peace
in the blank heaven of complete belonging.

Not steam on the hot pavement after rain,
the garbled rumors of a shape, a gesture
shy of the light, their gauzy shiftingness

itself too much confinement as each blurred
strand twists back in an agony of yearning
toward the mere dispersal they had risen from.
