Yes, like you, I too have been summoned
by an urgent phone call from someone
whose name I never knew
and I have taken the very next plane
alone to a strange dark city on a January night,
New Year’s Day as it happened, and
I too have stood on the concrete island
at the massive airport terminal flagging down
unwilling limousines, all chrome and glass,
and have been driven at last down looping roads,
through unfamiliar towns and neighborhoods
to the wrong entrance of an unfamiliar hospital
where I have walked the long hallways, carrying
my lug-heavy suitcase close to midnight
down unlit passages and into incorrect elevators,
past empty nurses’ stations where only the blue
blinking light of some translucent tubing
indicated there was a soul alive and I have entered
swinging doors marked Do Not Enter,
marked Isolation, marked Intensive Care,
and I have arrived alone in my black wool coat,
