I’ve never been very fond of mountains
and I detest the Alps. I’ve never seen the Andes
or the Cordilleras. But I found the Sierra
de Guadarrama ravishing, with its gentle
ascent and fallow deer and stags on the peaks
as pictured in the tourist brochures.
Only the electric air of the Engadine
won us over, dear Mosca, but it wasn’t
so richly rewarding that we said, hie manebimus.
Among lakes, our only great find was Sorapis.
It had the solitude of woodchucks, more often
heard than seen, and the air of the Celestials;
but the road that took you there! At first
I traveled it alone to see if your eyes
could penetrate the clouds zigzagging
