for Benjamin Weissman

The window’s wide open.
The crowns of a blue-leafed
and a green-leafed tree
are visible outdoors, in front
of a ridge of washed-out mountains.
Propped up on one elbow,
leaning his cheek on his hand,
he looks at her as she sleeps,
facing away from him. She lies
with her head on her crooked arm.
A blue blanket seeps from between
her knees. Their bed fills the room,
looking less like a bed
than a small stage.
The thin mattress doesn’t seem
to rest on anything.
The third figure on the bed’s
a brown dog, his tame face
resting on crossed paws.
He’s also fast asleep.
Both humans are naked.
The man’s skin is so much darker
than the woman’s, he seems
to belong to a different race.
The sight of her white form
won’t leave him in peace.
When he shuts his eyes,
her aura flares on his retinas:
a fuzzy brightness he finds
himself tender custodian of
If it were to vanish,
he’d feel like a blind man,
chasing the irreplaceable.
He thinks he would disappear.
