For whom are you intended, wine in the corked bottle
on a white tablecloth,
next to some swaying flowers,
while a young girl sweeps the still empty room?

You’ll untie the tongue of the silent one,
make the fool into a wise man,
and to the weakling you’ll give courage
to act on his secret desire.

Out of the wise man you’ll make a foolish one
who squanders his wealth among the much-pampered
      servants and flunkies
and who promises the big-breasted cashier
a house with pine needles on the floor.

Perhaps you’ll turn the head of a beautiful woman
so that she’ll quit the table for one of the upstairs rooms
followed by some worthless fellow
who makes up verses with only one thing in mind.
