The afternoon has started to hurt itself.
It has grown inward and is straying
Into fields forbidden. The rain has taken
A heavy turn.
                           That signpost that was love
Is lost now. We thought we knew so much,
But all was deception. No decisive moment
Comes. There is only one long,
Slow movement.
      Hands that fed,
      Arms that held,
The whole assemblage of kindness transformed,
What was free and sure lives in the past,
      Unfurls in the perfect folds
Of sacred sculpture, the beautiful, painted
Faces on thirteenth-century walls.
