What vague dispassion or crisis of hope
entered the artist’s head when, leaving off
his study of a woman, he began,

still on the same stretcher, another work—
this one, too, the portrait of a girl
but with, restorers tell us, different eyes

and gown, an altogether different grin?
His reused canvas (probably prescribed
by a lack of means) was not unusual,

though certainly there’d been a loss of paint:
umbers crowded at their vanishing,
or his crisp siennas fixed as auburn hair.

What care he took to cover them, beginning.
so nearly with the features of the old,
obliterating, reshaping a cheek
