I

Things you said in drugstores
when buying painkillers
or at your tailor’s
apart from details of measurements or cut—
brouillons of chitchat,
in what way did they ever express you?

In the morning—still shattered
from the palaver of getting up—
things babbled, so as not to stagger off in silence,
this and that, bits of news,
general truths, all mixed up—
the general truths were always your forte!
Where is the seat of that in you? In your gut? How long for?
And what is it anyway? Source of instinct, cement of optimism,
                                                                      economic speculation—
certainly something incredibly flimsy!

All of it totted up
from morning and nighttime hours,
in civvies and in uniform
makes you vomit with its superfluousness
as you look back, dead words, hollow sounds,
no connection with anything—

or is it here that human fellowship begins?
