i work for the deputy mayor
of the city of troy
growing up was mayhem
there were 6 kids, i’m 1 of 5 girls
you are in charge of the phone
my son’s a video-game junkie

i’m the responsible helen, not the fun-loving helen
i am on time
everything’s there (at proctor’s)
he looks just like his ancestors
i want troy back to where it was
i have a ghost doorbell

one of my boyfriends, michael layton, was a junkie
my father’s name was theodore albert mayer
HEGEMAN 3-7830 was the # of my phone
russell was sitting in inwood park reading THE ILIAD
when a woman leading a brown dog who became
hector said: hey do you want this dog, i have
        to go to troy
troy never figured in my mythology of girls
mayhem doesn’t mean what we think it means, mayhem

means freddie stegel rang my doorbell
he said: hi, i’m looking for helen
a long time ago a helen was
here but that was in an earlier time
she may have moved on; her ancestors
lived here, this lobster is them, they went to proctor’s

there’s a mural of the helens of troy musical in proctor’s
lobby & a painting of a ringing bell
i know exactly where most of my ancestors
are buried, along with a slew of helens
helen was a common name at that time
as was catherine, emily even philomena was

mayhem means loss of a limb as in maiming, what mayhem
in words, people i grew up with used the word junkie
loosely, anybody could be a whore or junkie, especially to girls
a strange & bookless childhood was had by the maidens mayer
we never knew there were any troys but ancient troy
nor were we allowed to talk to non-catholics on the phone

growing up in troy might’ve been better, it was
easy to walk around, you could see movies at proctor’s
that was in the time
before drug addicts, you’d hear the church bell
sinuously announcing that another helen
was marrying a descendant of his ancestors
