It’s a black-weather day with no sun and no change.

Sun flashes in the iron sky.
Sun shines in the iron sky like a tympano.

Rain pops off giant leaves, turning our beds to mud.

Bitterest down there, but ceremonial.

(In the forsythia tunnel the blossoms were trumpets.)

Our skin itched from bites, from thorns.
Whatever song was sung was buried in the dirt.
It hummed, it hummed and I rocked to its rhythm,
I beat the dirt like a drum. I took pity. I took it.

I made the children be quiet. I told them sharply, Stop crying.
