Just as Milton had to face
the problem of rain in paradise,
I have to figure out what to do with you.

The garden, of course, needed plenty
to keep perfectly green and flourishing,
but who wants to imagine our naked parents

slouching through Eden under the first umbrella,
or having to stay indoors all day
and get on each other’s nerves over nothing?

Are you good for me or bad for me,
I am wondering—
nourishing, healthful, and ablutionary,

or just a little boat of a matchstick
carried along the gutter
by a downpour toward the corner drain?

There really should be more paintings
of the two of them naked
and fewer of them covering themselves in shame.
