Flaubert in Nogent-sur-Seine

Everywhere I walk I walk into my past,
as if swimming upstream. There is a chord
of melancholy in the air.
Nothing’s changed: The furniture there,
even the carpet, looks the same as last
time. I’m terribly bored.

Only the boil on my tongue
is getting bigger. What a farce.
A small word
of advice. Novels, like dung,
emerge slowly. Drop a nice big turd
for me. It could be worse.
