Moths bat their brains to powder
against the streetlight

on the corner of First and Main
where the old men gather—

suspenders tight on their bellies,
skin pink as a baby’s

as they smoke and spit judiciously.

Silence is just fine, too,
though it makes the real card

among them nervous.
