Ruth Anne Dodge Memorial,
                                                        Council Bluffs, IA

Always the impulse to be contained,
a ceaseless impetus beneath the surface

of my lithic stare and feigned sleep.
In a monumental effort not to move

I cling to nightfall, hide my speed from my
belief of bronze. I’ve risen from a dream

of distance implicit in my form,
a belief that God does not sleep

but watches each dream, each secret hears.
My doubt listens to water seeping.

If only I had been convinced I was
free to rise, regain air, not remain

fixed to what I think of as not wrong,
my awful body sprawled across the dawn.
