Poem of the Day
Yellow Striped Pajamas
By Shamsher Bahadur Singh
walking silently on his paws, he emerges from the semidarkness and disappears into it.
walking silently on his paws, he emerges from the semidarkness and disappears into it.
See how the god mounts her powerful back
and clasps the warrior thighs in his great loins,
smelling of dung and wild carrots. Rejoice
Through the veiled hush of the nut garden, God
was walking in the cool of the day; He
felt like talking again to a mortal
For today at least the snow has gone
and the backyard is awash with daffodils.
See how the sun has come to court you? Quick,
It is hard to think of the people of Thebes
as being fortunate (so much time has gone by),
but they possessed a machine of exact measure:
These are those same trees you saw six months ago.
I’ve drawn them in a way that will explain
Not only their nature, but the nature of snow,
One moment the sky is its usual dark,
Dimensionless self, and the next, with a double burst—
Two spreading spheres of radiance, phosphor
“I did not think my posing for him
would reveal anything not already known.
After all, we are passionate lovers
Later, we will notice a vast communication
between separate selves. We will learn
in the colors of our lover’s body
O for Orchard leads only
to Orchard Hill Miniature Horses,
then Orchid Coiffeurs.
The poets have all told my story wrong
thought there was a well, and me out all alone.
The well was deep and so the rope was long.
